All-wise fediverse: what do you actually want in a habit tracking app?
I have an "Ask HN" thread at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33842599, but feel free to respond here.
Please boost/reblog. I could use the reach and feedback.
Disclosure: I'm the author of https://flathabits.com and would like to shape it into a truly user-focused app (no nonsense of any kind).
Btw, the app is already #orgmode friendly if that's your cup of tea.
I think Shadiversity made very compelling arguments pro-AI art. This video is a very short one, only focusing on the major accusations, but he also has a 90 minute long one on the topic.
The fact is, that under current intellectual property law, when you make your work publicly available, you don't have a right to say whether others can view it or not, and you can not copyright a "style" or a "motif", only specific expression.
The more I learn about AI tools for writing, generating images, etc… The more I think they should all be put on pause while regulation is put in place to decide who owns what and how you can decide to not have your stuff used to train an algorithm, or what you’re entitled to if it is indeed used.
Datasets used should be fully open and accessible and it should be possible to say you don’t want your creations to be included, and have them « unlearned » as well, if that’s even technically feasible
Sometimes I get asked: Why do you work on free and open source software if you don't get payed for it?
Today I realized that most of those people spend half (or at least big part) of their life on social networks literally working on big corps without any payments and in addition to that without any goal.
I don't want to look cool here, I just realized how sad it is and share my thoughts.
I had an old gmail acc, that was used for various registration and confirmation tasks for almost 2 decades and mostly never for composing emails, but recently, smtp and imap access to it disappeared.
Ok, I'll keep you as a reverse proxy forwarding incoming messages to one of my actual mail boxes for a while, but won't spent any more minute to workaround your proprietary buggy behavior. And hack off with your "security" enchancements, my dear privacy-respecting bigcorp.
Instagram is trying to intimidate us with threats of legal action.

We're not giving up. #fediverse
What a bad take…
Exclusives suck as a concept. They always sucked. They’re hurting consumers and only benefit platform holders. Thankfully #Valve doesn’t look like they’re going to go that route.
🔴 On today's #SystemCrafters stream, we'll discuss the plans I have for the SC community and YouTube channel in 2023!
We'll talk about upcoming videos, streams, Crafted Emacs, Crafted Guix (!), community events, and more.

Let's go for this week's #Linux and #opensource news video! This time, we have #Meta getting yet another slap in the face from the #EuropeanUnion, this time for an abuse of a dominant position, we have #EpicGames settling an enormous FTC fine after they violated children's privacy rights and used dark patterns in #Fortnite, and we have #Mint 21.1 releasing for everyone, fractional scaling being finally fixed in #Wayland, and more!
In my daily use of #Linux as my desktop operating system, I still encounter 5 main friction points. Well, ok 4, the 5th is more something people I helped migrate to Linux told me about.
In this video, I talk about each of them, partly because I want to share my frustration, and also partly because I hope someone has a miracle solution in the comments 🫣

This is a reminder to myself (and others) to donate to emacs.ch. Apparently there are 500 or more users here now. I expect if enough of us donate the cost of a meal at a nice but still moderately priced restaurant will be enough to cover what our hosts are providing to us for the year.

just found out how to enable hibernate on Ubuntu Studio 22.04
First time I had to uninstall stuff to setup a #printer on #Linux.
sudo apt purge cups-browsed
sudo mv /var/cache/cups /var/cache/cups-old
afterwards the automatic detection is gone and no semi working one and a half printer pop up even after I manually uninstalled them. Setting up the printer with #DNS-DS and the Canon GX7000 series, driverless profile.
I spent roughly 2x more time editing this video than what I usually do.
And it’s performing horribly: the topic is more important than the edit!
Here's an interesting question: Can you attend this weekend's #EmacsConf with GNU #Emacs itself? Be sure to attend these great presentations December 3 and 4: https://emacsconf.org/2022/talks/ And if you connect via Emacs, let us know!
